Slovak Chemistry Olympiad (Chemická olympiáda)¶
Overview¶
The Slovak Chemistry Olympiad (Chemická olympiáda) is Slovakia's national chemistry competition for secondary and primary school students. It is organized by NIVAM (Národný inštitút vzdelávania a mládeže — National Institute of Education and Youth) under the Ministry of Education, Science, Research and Sport of the Slovak Republic, with the Slovak Chemical Society (Slovenská chemická spoločnosť, SChemS) serving as the professional guarantor. As part of the former Czechoslovakia, Slovakia is a founding nation of the IChO.

Competition Format¶
The competition is organized in five categories by school type and grade level, progressing through up to five rounds.
Categories¶
- Category A — the most advanced, for students in the final years of gymnasium (IChO selection category)
- Categories B and C — for progressively younger gymnasium students
- Category D — for primary school pupils and lower gymnasium students
- Category EF — for vocational school students (divided into JUNIOR and SENIOR)
Rounds¶
The competition progresses through five stages: Home Round (Domáce kolo), School Round (Školské kolo), District Round (Okresné kolo, Category D only), Regional Round (Krajské kolo), and National Round (Celoštátne kolo, Categories A and EF only).
- Home and School Rounds — open entry, involving thousands of participants across hundreds of schools
- Regional Round — top scorers advance with quotas ensuring geographical representation
- National Round — approximately 50 students compete (typically 35 in Category A and 15 in Category EF) at a university faculty
IChO Selection¶
The top 16 Category A students from the national round are invited to a theoretical training camp, the top 8 advance to a practical camp, and the final 4 form Slovakia's IChO team. A separate selection identifies a 2-student team for the Grand Prix Chimique.
Summer Schools¶
The Letná škola chemikov (Summer School of Chemists) is a two-week intensive camp for the top ~50 regional finalists from Categories B and C, which also serves as the IChO training camp. A separate Letná škola mladých chemikov serves the top 24 Category D students.
Eligibility¶
Open to students at Slovak secondary schools (gymnázium, stredná odborná škola) and upper grades of primary schools (základná škola). Students may compete in a higher category than their grade mandates, and may enter up to two categories in one school year.
Student Outcomes¶
Olympiad success provides academic benefits at Slovak universities:
- Bonus points during admission proceedings at many faculties for success in relevant subject olympiads
- Admission without entrance exams at some chemistry-focused faculties (e.g., Faculty of Natural Sciences at Comenius University, Faculty of Chemical and Food Technology at STU) for top national-round performers
- IChO team members are exceptionally competitive for admission to top science programmes domestically and internationally
IChO Performance¶
As an independent nation (since 1993), Slovakia has earned 13 gold, 58 silver, and 51 bronze medals, and 2 honorable mentions at the IChO — a strong record reflecting consistent participation and performance.
The combined Czechoslovakia + Slovakia heritage totals 30 gold, 76 silver, and 72 bronze medals, and 9 honorable mentions.
History¶
- Mid-1960s: The national Chemická olympiáda was established, now in its 63rd edition.
- 1968: Czechoslovakia was a founding participant of the IChO, alongside Poland and Hungary. The 1st IChO was held in Prague.
- 1985: The 17th IChO was held in Bratislava (then Czechoslovakia), where the official IChO flag tradition began.
- 1993: Following the dissolution of Czechoslovakia, Slovakia began competing independently at the IChO and has maintained uninterrupted participation since.
- 2018: The 50th IChO was co-hosted by Prague and Bratislava, jointly organized by the Czech Republic and Slovakia.
