Romanian Chemistry Olympiad (Olimpiada Națională de Chimie)¶
Overview¶
The Olimpiada Națională de Chimie is Romania's national chemistry competition, organized by the Ministry of Education through its network of county school inspectorates. Local universities serve as host venues and partners. The Societatea de Chimie din România (Romanian Chemical Society) acts as a supporting partner. Romania is one of the historically strongest IChO nations, with a combined total of 189 medals.

Competition Format¶
The olympiad follows a multi-stage elimination pyramid.
-
School stage (etapa pe școală)
- Held at individual schools
- Open to all interested students
-
County stage (etapa județeană)
- Held across Romania's 41 counties plus Bucharest
- Students must score at least 60 points to qualify for the national stage
-
National stage (etapa națională)
- Over 400 students from grades 7–12 compete
- Includes a 3-hour theoretical exam and a 3-hour practical (laboratory) exam at a university lab
- A tie-breaker exam (proba de baraj) is used to resolve ties for top prizes
IChO Selection¶
Top performers at the national stage are invited to training camps coordinated by professors from the University of Bucharest Faculty of Chemistry. The final 4-member team represents Romania at the IChO.
Eligibility¶
Open to students in grades 7–12. Students may compete at a higher grade level than their current enrollment. Open to all educational formats: state schools, private schools, evening programmes, and reduced-frequency programmes.
Student Outcomes¶
National olympiad prize winners receive significant university admission benefits:
- Admission without entrance exam on state-funded (tuition-free) seats at many Romanian universities
- West University of Timișoara (UVT): First-prize through mention winners receive free tuition, a monthly scholarship of 600 lei, free dormitory housing, and travel support
- Medical universities (UMFST Târgu Mureș, UMFCD Carol Davila Bucharest): Accept 1st, 2nd, and 3rd prize winners without entrance exam
IChO Performance¶
The official IChO results database lists Romania with 37 gold, 82 silver, and 62 bronze medals, and 8 honorable mentions — one of the strongest records in IChO history.
History¶
- 1970: Romania first participated in the IChO at the 3rd edition in Hungary — the first expansion beyond the original three founding nations.
- 1974: Romania hosted the 6th IChO in Bucharest, inviting Sweden and Yugoslavia — the first non-socialist-bloc participants.
- 2000s–present: The national olympiad continues in its 58th+ edition. The competition has been hosted in Iași five times (1977, 1991, 2004, 2014, and most recently).
