Competition Format¶
The competition progresses through three increasingly selective rounds.
- Round 1
- A 90-minute written examination held at participating schools across Norway
- Typically held in autumn
- Approximately 400–500 students enter, and the top ~150 advance to Round 2
- Round 2
- A more demanding 3-hour written examination
- Held at regional centres or UiO
- The top ~16 students qualify for the final training camp
- Final training camp
- A 5-day residential camp held at the University of Oslo
- Includes advanced lectures, laboratory training, and a final selection examination
- The top 4 students form Norway's IChO delegation
The competition is open to students enrolled in Norwegian upper secondary schools (videregående skole) who have not yet commenced university studies.
Top performers in the Norwegian Chemistry Olympiad are well positioned for admission to science programmes at Norwegian universities, particularly the University of Oslo (UiO) and the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU). Several former olympiad participants have gone on to academic careers in chemistry and related fields.
History¶
