🇬🇷 Pan-Hellenic Chemistry Competition

Πανελλήνιος Μαθητικός Διαγωνισμός Χημείας

Overview

The Pan-Hellenic Student Chemistry Competition (Πανελλήνιος Μαθητικός Διαγωνισμός Χημείας, PMDCh) is Greece's national chemistry olympiad, organized by the Association of Greek Chemists (Ένωση Ελλήνων Χημικών, EEX) — a public-law entity founded in 1924 — with the approval of the Greek Ministry of Education. The EEX manages the entire competition, from student registration through exam preparation, grading, and IChO team selection. The selection camp is hosted at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens (NKUA) chemistry department.

Competition Format

The competition has three phases and three grade levels (A: 1st year Lyceum, B: 2nd year, Γ: 3rd year).

  • Round 1

    • A 3-hour examination open to all registered lyceum students
    • Typically held in March
    • Minimum 90 points required to advance (with a guarantee of at least 30 students per grade level)
  • Round 2

    • A 90-minute in-person written examination
    • Typically held 1–2 weeks after round 1
    • Top scorers advance to the selection camp
  • Selection Camp

    • Approximately 8 third-year and 3 second-year top performers are invited to a training camp at NKUA
    • Includes 5-hour practical (laboratory) and theoretical examinations
    • The final 4-member IChO team is selected

Open to students enrolled in 1st, 2nd, or 3rd year of public or private general lyceums in Greece. Registration is online through the EEX portal.

Student Outcomes

International and Balkan olympiad medalists in chemistry belong to a special admission category for Greek higher education institutions, enrolled in excess of the standard admission quota. Olympiad distinctions are also valued at competitive foreign institutions.

History

  • 1984: Greece first participated in the IChO (16th IChO, Frankfurt).
  • ~1987–88: The first Pan-Hellenic Student Chemistry Competition was held (now in its 39th edition).
  • 1989: Greece earned its first IChO medal (bronze).
  • 2021: Greece earned its first IChO silver medal.
  • 2013–present: Greece has participated in every IChO without interruption.

The official IChO results database lists Greece with 0 gold, 1 silver, and 29 bronze medals, and 11 honorable mentions. Greece has been a consistent bronze-medal-earning nation since the late 1980s.
