Junior Canadian Chemistry Olympiad (JCCO)¶
Note
Please be aware that JCCO exhibits several characteristics more typical of a commercial contest instead of a pure academic one.
敬请留意:多种迹象表明,JCCO是大量面向亚洲国际学生而非专注于加拿大本土的、政府/学会等背景色彩较为薄弱的、奖项含金量不明的高度商业化的赛事。

Overview¶
The Junior Canadian Chemistry Olympiad (JCCO) is presented by its organizers as an annual chemistry competition aimed mainly at middle-school and early high-school students (grades 8–11). It is branded as being sponsored by the Chemical Institute of Canada (CIC), while the operational delivery is handled by regional commercial operators: ASDAN China (阿思丹) runs the China sitting, SIMCC runs the Singapore and Malaysia sittings, and affiliated tutoring providers distribute preparation materials.
JCCO is a separate competition from the senior Canadian Chemistry Contest (CCC) / Canadian Chemistry Olympiad (CCO) and is not part of Canada's IChO selection pipeline. Despite sharing the "Canadian Chemistry Olympiad" name, it has a very different structure, purpose, and audience from the senior programme documented on the Canada ChO page.
Note
Readers should be aware that the competition exhibits several characteristics more typical of a commercial enrichment contest than of a traditional national chemistry olympiad:
- Operational control sits with commercial education companies rather than a university, government ministry, or national chemistry society. ASDAN China and SIMCC are for-profit competition-delivery firms.
- CIC is named as the sponsor but does not list JCCO on its main site (cheminst.ca), nor does it host JCCO past papers alongside the senior CCC / CCO archive.
- The participant base is overwhelmingly in Asia, not Canada. Publicly documented sittings are concentrated in China, Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, and Cambodia, with little or no visible participation from Canadian schools or students.
- No connection to IChO selection. JCCO scores do not feed into Canada's IChO team selection, which runs exclusively through the senior CCC / CCO / UBC camp pathway.
- No publicly documented university-admissions weight. JCCO achievement carries no known formal recognition from Canadian universities.
Competition Format¶
- Target audience: students in grades 8–11 (Year 9–12).
- Duration: Online, 90 minutes.
- Question type: 25 multiple-choice questions.
- Language: bilingual English / Chinese in the China sitting; English elsewhere.
- Schedule: typically mid-December each year for the China sitting; September for the Singapore / Malaysia sitting.
